AJ (August John) Hutson, formerly of Newburgh, died April 16, 2012, of complications
from Alzheimer's Disease in Zionsville, Indiana.
He liked to ride his bicycle.
Born January 13, 1931, in Newburgh, Indiana, he was a member of Berean Bible
Church. A Golden Glove Middleweight Champion for 1953, he remained physically
active most of his life. He enjoyed Storytellers.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Carolyn in 1993, his companion,
Rosemary Hirsch in 1999, his father, Frederick in 1942, his mother, Audrey in 1936,
his grandmother, Lillie in 1965, his sister, Velva Mae in 1936, and his grandson and
granddaughter, Hendrik and Emily Volk, in 2001. He is survived by his brother, Albert
(Jo) of Newburgh, sister, Ruth of Cocoa, Florida, daughter, Elizabeth (Richard) Volk
of Sinzig, Germany, daughter, Joy (Tom) Estridge of Indianapolis, son, Jay (John
Moses) of Dallas, Texas, and five grandchildren.
A lifelong resident of Newburgh, he married Carolyn Joy Friedle in July, 1953. A brief
stint in the Navy Reserve was followed by working several jobs before settling into
work as a heavy equipment operator with the Operators Union. He also was a
partner in Tiger Trash, Inc., and former owner of Ames Septic Tank Company. He
rode his bicycle across Iowa several times in the RAGBRAI and enjoyed being
physically active despite rheumatoid arthritis that froze his spine.
A family graveside service will be held April 23, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Bates Hill
Cemetery, Newburgh. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's
