Charles G. Gardner, Sr., 89, passed away Tuesday July 29, 2014 at his residence. He was born February 9, 1925 in Newburgh to the late William Roy and Victoria Loretta (Whitcomb) Gardner. He served in the United States Navy during WWII in the Pacific Area. He worked 40 years for the L & N and CSX railroads. Charles was a member of First Christian Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge in Newburgh. He helped organize the Newburgh Little League and coached five years, then three years with the Babe Ruth League. He was a former member of the Newburgh Town Board and the Newburgh Fire Dept. He volunteered for the Yellow Stone National Park, Lincoln State Park and the US Forest Service. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Robert; sister, Delores Allen; and infant son, Wayne. Charles is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Jewel Gardner; three sons, Butch (Sherri), Mike (Michele), Scott (Leanette); three daughters, Debbie Buchta (Charles), Becky Lackey (Mike), Beverly Foster (Keith); thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, with one on the way. Private funeral services and burial with full military rites were held at Rose Hill Cemetery.
