Dorothy Virginia Rogers Emig [nee Rogers] died June 30, 2011, at the age of 94.
She was born in Glendale, Ohio, on February 12, 1917. Her parents Jay and Laura
Rogers of Glendale and brother Maynard Rogers [Martha] of Evansville preceded her
in death. She is survived by two daughters Jessamine Schreiber [Bruce] of Ross,
Ohio, and Laura Roth [Greg] of Newburgh, a son John Emig of Arcata, California,
three nieces Jane Hess Walker, Mary Rogers Ruthenburg, and Marcy Rogers and
two nephews Bill and Dan Hess. She leaves three grandchildren Amy Davenport
[Dave], Jill Ballard [David], and Randy Roth [Amanda], and ten great-grandchildren.
Dorothy attended Western College for Women at Miami University and graduated
from the University of Cincinnati in 1938. Dorothy taught preschool at the
Rehabilitation Center on Bellemeade Avenue. She married John [Jack] Emig in
1940. She lived with Jack in Cincinnati, OH, Houston, TX, Memphis, TN, Evansville
and Newburgh, IN.
They were married for 52 years.
Dorothy spent her life serving others. She was active in the Tres Dias Community,
her church and her community-at-large. She was known in Newburgh and to many
others as the Lady with the flowers children painted on her house. She called it "The
House of Grace."
Dorothy's ministry and legacy included knitting over 2000 pair of baby booties over
the course of nearly 30 years. She eventually "bootied" babies of the babies she'd
"bootied". Giving booties to family, friends, and others was her way of sharing God's
Love to new and expectant parents near and far. She even sent seven pair to the
septuplets born in Iowa in 1997.
Dorothy opened her home for year-long stays to foreign graduate students on two
separate occasions. One was from Japan and the other from India. She eagerly
shared her faith and her country with each of these women and they parted life-long
friends.
To her grandchildren, she is "Gram" [short for "Grammar" - of which she was a
stickler]. To her great-grandchildren she is "Gigi". Dorothy never actually met a
stranger and was known and loved by many in the Tri-State area and beyond.
Memorial gifts may be sent Evansville Pregnancy Resource Center, where many
babies received booties, or Newburgh Zion United Church of Christ. Surely, as her
children "rise up and call her Blessed" [Proverbs 31], she will be remembered and
missed by all whose lives she touched.
Celebration Service will be held at noon on Saturday, July 2, at Zion United Church of
Christ, 10 W. First St., Newburgh. Visitation at Zion will precede the Service
Saturday from 10am to noon. There will be no interment. Memorial gifts may be sent
to Evansville Pregnancy Resource Center or Newburgh Zion United Church of Christ.
Condolences at www.titzerfuneralhomes.com. Dorothy lived her life with passionate
love for her LORD Jesus Christ, for her country and for people, most especially the
Little Ones.
