Edward F. Schmitt Sr., 95 of Evansville, passed away April 29, 2014 at Good Samaritan. Edward was born July 5, 1918, in Vanderburgh County to Joseph and Anna (Angermeier) Schmitt. Ed and Irene (Eble) were married February 2, 1946 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in the city. She preceded him in death April 19, 2004 after 58 years of marriage.
He was a US Navy Veteran, serving in WWII on the USS Niobrara oil tanker. He was a machinist and night foreman at Schnacke Mfg for 27 years, Whirlpool, and retired from Master Tool & Die in 1984.
He was a life member of the Owls, VFW 1114, and Darmstadt Retirees, an active worker for Marian Day School, president of the River City Ramblers Square Dancers, and a devout member of St. Theresa Catholic Church. He and Irene made quilt tops together for the church.
He loved to take the family traveling and camping all across the U.S. and Canada, local day trips, and Family Night swimming at Garvin Park. He always owned motorcycles and took all of the kids riding on his 1947 Salsbury Scooter.
His pride and joy was his garden. He always had the first and biggest tomatoes in the neighborhood. One year he harvested over 240 pounds of strawberries, and he continued working in his garden until 93 years old. He worked hard all of his life, provided for his family, and devotedly cared for his two adult sons.
His sisters Florine Gries and Olivia Weiss and brother Joseph Schmitt Jr. preceded him in death.
He is survived by daughters Julie Schmitt (Lonnie) of Las Cruces NM, Ruth (Michael) Patterson, sons Eddie, Kenny and Jim Schmitt, 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren of Evansville.
We would like to thank the staff at Good Samaritan Pavilion and Deaconess Hospice for their compassionate care, St. Theresa, and Father Ted Tempel.
