Edward James Shaughnessy

Edward James Shaughnessy, 93, of Newburgh, Indiana died November 17,
2009 at the Deaconess Hospital in Evansville IN.
Mr. Shaughnessy was born in Syracuse, NY on April 10, 1916 into a large
family of six siblings. He attended local Catholic schools and began working
at an early age during the Depression to supplement family income. In the
mid 1930's he attended Oswego State Teacher's College in Oswego, NY,
graduating with a Bachelor's degree in 1937. At Oswego, he met his future
wife, Emily Di Clementine. They were married in 1938 and recently
celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary.
During World War II, Mr. Shaughnessy worked as a teacher in New York City,
assigned to the most difficult locations of Harlem and Brooklyn. He then
continued his work in education, earning a Masters Degree and serving as a
school principal in other New York State locations. In the mid 1950's he
joined Eastman Kodak in Rochester, New York. He later transferred to
Tennessee Eastman Corporation in Kingsport, Tennessee as the Director of
Corporate Training, where he was recognized nationally as a leader in the
American Society of Training Directors and in the development of corporate
training programs. Mr. Shaughnessy retired from Eastman in 1981.
Throughout his career, Mr. Shaughnessy volunteered in various civic
activities, serving as School Board Chairman for a major school system in
the Rochester area, and on other school boards and in community
organizations. He was an active participant in Catholic Church activities and
was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was also a
member of Civitan and 50 plus year member of Alcoholics Anonymous,
where he mentored and assisted many other others in the organization. An
avid fisherman, Mr. Shaughnessy fished in the Great Lakes and many
eastern lakes, rivers and costal areas. He and his wife traveled extensively,
including trips to India and Europe and throughout the US. In the mid 1980's,
Mr. and Mrs. Shaughnessy moved to Northern Virginia, and in 2007, to
Newburgh.
Mr. Shaughnessy is survived by his wife of 71 years, Emily D. Shaughnessy
of Newburgh, a daughter and son-law, Patricia and Patrick Harvey of
Newburgh, and two sons and daughters in law, Dr. Peter and Carol
Shaughnessy of Denver, Colorado, and Daniel and Judith Shaughnessy of
Purcellville, Virginia, as well as eleven grandchildren and fifteen great
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 21, 2009 with a
Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame
Rd. Newburgh, IN. Rev. Joseph Ziliak will officiate with entombment in St.
John the Baptist Catholic Church Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, November 20, 2009, with a prayer
service at 7:30 p.m. at Titzer Family Funeral Homes ~ Simpson Chapel, 510
W. Jennings St. Newburgh, IN. Additional visitation will be Saturday, 9 a.m.
to service time at the church.
