Frederick G. "Rick" Bates
Frederick G. "Rick" Bates, 74, of Newburgh, IN, passed away, Tuesday,
February 9, 2010 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, IN. He was born
in Cleveland, OH, November 30, 1935 to Ralph and Millicent "Bobbie"
(Blase) Bates. He was a graduate of Clinton High School in Clinton IN. He
served in the United States Air Force Reserves from 1954 to 1962, during
which time he was a member of the 434th Troop Carrier Wing. He was a
member of the American Legion.
Mr. Bates received his B. S. in Journalism and his Master of Science in
Vocational Education Administration from Indiana State University. He
worked first as a reporter/editor for the Terre Haute Star newspaper. He was
nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, with the Terre Haute Star staff, for coverage of
a coal mine disaster in 1961. He began his career in education at Indiana
State University as Research & Technical Editor and later, Instructor in the
School of Technology. He then became, Director of Public Relations, and
later, Registrar and Director of Admissions at Vincennes University. He also
worked in vocational education for Mississippi State University and Ohio
State University. In 1981, he was the recipient of the initial award for
Outstanding Service to Industrial Training in the State of Mississippi.
As an employee of the U. S. Department of Labor he worked in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia, as an Instructional Material Specialist.
Mr. Bates traveled extensively and had many interests, including African art,
paleontology, and photography. He will be missed by friends all over the
world.
He is survived by his sister, Betsy Moore (Richard "Rick") of Laramie, WY:
nephew, Andrew "Andy" Moore (Jessica) of Kewanee, IL: and former
spouse, Catherine Bordenet of Newburgh, IN.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 13, 2010 at St.
John the Baptist Catholic Church 625 Frame Rd. Newburgh, IN. Reverend
Joseph Ziliak will officiate.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
