George “Ray” Raymond Rhoades, 95, of Newburgh, IN, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 13, 1929, to Clarence and Anna Marie (Suter) Rhoades.
Ray was married to the love of his life, Ruth Rhoades, for 75 years. He was a brick mason and general contractor. Ray and David Curry went on to start Rhoades and Curry Masonry and Construction Inc. over 60 years ago and have remained lifelong friends since then. The business has now been passed down to Ray’s sons and is still operating today. He loved teaching others his trade and taught many over the years. He attended Bosse High School where he played football. Ray enjoyed many hobbies including playing pool, operating his HAM radio using the call sign N9PDK, and collecting model trains. He enjoyed spending his summers with his family at his river camp on the Ohio River at French Island Marina and his winters at his home in Leesburg Florida with his wife Ruth. He will be missed beyond measure by his family and friends.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Anna Marie (Suter) Rhoades; siblings, Stan Rhoades, Edward Rhoades, Pauline Shoptaugh, Mildred Stivers, Harold Rhoades, Clarence Rhoades, Jr., Louis Rhoades, Marilyn Long, Pete Rhoades; great-great grandchild, Lola Helmbrecht.
He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Ruth Rhoades; children, Kathleen Lewis, Anna Marie Herr, Jim Rhoades (Onya), Timothy Rhoades (Angie); grandchildren, Warren Herr, Lee Ann Mulzer (Adam), Amy Rhoades (Steve), Tracy Matthews, Kimberly Tatum (Kelsey), Jeremy Kirsch, Alan Rhoades (Brandie), Timothy Herr (Jill), Branden Kirsch (Liz); great grandchildren, Shelbi Kirby, James Helmbrecht (Sierra), Jessica, Josh, and Collin Matthews, Brody and Kuper Kinsey, Kayden Tatum, Brayden Kirsch, Dylan and Lexi Rhoades, Taylor, Jordanne, Timothy, and Tyson Herr, Isaac and Bella Kirsch; great-great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Raymond James Helmbrecht; siblings, Roy Rhoades, and Carolyn Eissler.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, December 7, 2024, at Titzer Family Funeral Homes Simpson Chapel, 510 W. Jennings St, Newburgh, IN 47630, with burial to follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 8pm on Friday, December 6, 2024, and from 9am. until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Donations in memory of Ray may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.
