Gerald D. Matthews
Gerald D. Matthews, 86, of Elberfeld,
passed away Thursday evening, March
27, 2008 at his home with his family at his
side.
Gerald was born November 21, 1921 in
Wadesville to George and Ida Matthews.
He retired from driving a school bus for the
Warrick County School
Corporation, along with his wife Rosemary,
after 38 years. During his
life, he also owned a feed grinding business
and worked at Wilson's Lumber
Yard and Elberfeld Block Company.
Gerald was a W W II veteran, serving in the
U S Army in Germany with the
97th. Signal Battalion 3rd. Army, and was a
member of American Legion Post
351. He was a member of the Elberfeld Fire
Department for over 55 years.
He was also a Scout Master for many
years. He was a member of the
Lynnville Masonic Lodge 396.
Gerald is survived by his wife of over 64
years, Rosemary (Sharp) Matthews;
sons, Steven D. Matthews and wife,
Barbara of Evansville, David Matthews
and wife, Brenda of St. Louis, Gerald D.
Matthews, II of Elberfeld, and
Rollie Matthews and wife, Tracee of
Elberfeld; one brother, Russell
Matthews and wife, Peggy of Evansville;
nine grandchildren, Steven, II,
Eric and Sarah Matthews, Tracie and Brian
Matthews, Leza Schoettlin and Jay
Matthews, and Mandy Kirsch and Tara
Greenlee; step-grandson, Kirk Evans; 6
great-grandchildren.
Gerald was preceded in death by a sister
Mildred Colvin.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 31,
2008 at Zion United Church of
Christ in Elberfeld. Reverend Rick Bender
and Pastor Steve Oeth will
officiate. Burial will be in Blue Grass
Cemetery with military graveside
services conducted by American Legion
Post 351.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday, March 30, 2008 with a
Masonic service at 7 p.m. at the Titzer
Family Funeral Homes ~ Volkman
Chapel 2nd. & Elm Streets, Elberfeld,
Indiana. Additional visitation will
be Monday 10 a.m. to time of service at the
church.
