James (Bud) Luther Shackelford, III, 83, of Newburgh, passed away March
15, 2011. He was a man of great integrity and a great patriot who served his
country. Bud was a hero to those who loved him and a remarkable man who
always put family first.
He was born April 5, 1927 in Little Rock, Arkansas the son of Madoline
(Miles) and Haines Baxter Shackelford. He is preceded in death by his
parents and brothers Thomas Baxter, William Joseph, and Robert Edward.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen Hahn Shackelford; a son and
daughter-in-law, James L IV and Diane Shackelford of Owensville, IN: a
daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Mark Hillyard of NC: five
granddaughters: Heather (Jason) Nickel of MO: Ashley (Nick) Nanninga of
NV: Kathryn Shackelford of VA: Amanda Hillyard of NC and Annie
Shackelford of IN: two great-grandsons, Nathan Nanninga and Lucas Nickel.
Bud grew up in Newburgh, Indiana. He left high school to participate in the
"Great Debate" serving in the Merchant Marines where he spent his 18th
birthday at the invasion on Okinawa. Following the war, he enlisted in the
Army in order to earn the GI Bill and attend college. He served in the 11th
Airborne as part of the occupation force in Japan. Following his discharge in
1948 he started his college education at Evansville College. He married
Helen on Thursday, September 19, 1950 and received his recall papers for
the Korean Conflict on the following Tuesday. He was finally discharged
permanently in November of 1951.
He graduated from Evansville College in 1953 with a BS in Petroleum
Geology. He worked in the Illinois Basin until 1968 at which time he made a
change in professions. From 1968 until his retirement in 2000 he was an
Employment Counselor. From 1971 until his retirement, he was the owner of
Midwest Personnel, Inc.
Bud was an avid Aces fan and an original ticket holder at Roberts Stadium
for Aces Basketball.
He was very involved with the youth of Newburgh, serving on the Youth
Foundation Board, Advisor to the Newburgh Rainbow Girls and Chapter Dad
for DeMolay. He also started, with the faculty at Castle High School, the
Physical Education Archery Program.
He was a Past Master of Newburgh Masonic Lodge, Most Wise Master of
the Chapter Rose Croix, a member of Hadi Shrine, and a member and past
president of the Warrick County Shrine Club. He was honored on
September 25, 1990 by being made a 33rd Degree Master Mason.
Visitation will be held beginning at 11:00am on April 2, 2011 at Titzer Funeral
Home, Simpson Chapel, Newburgh, IN, (812) 853-8314, Memorial and
Masonic service will be held starting at 3:00pm with Military Honor Service to
follow at Newburgh Veterans Monument. Memorial gifts may be given in lieu
of flowers in Bud's name to the Indiana Masonic Home Foundation, 525 N
Illinois St, Indianapolis, Ind. 46204.
