Jon Edward Lybarger, 70, of Newburgh, IN, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2018 after a 6-month struggle with liver disease. Born in Geneva, IN, he was the son of Jim and Flossie Lybarger.
Jon was in the last graduating class of Geneva High School, in 1966. He earned degrees in business and education from Vincennes University, IUPUI and IPFW in Fort Wayne. He worked 42 years in Information Technology, moving to Newburgh to work for AIG (now One Main) in Evansville.
He served in the Air Force from 1967-71. He was stationed at George AFB in California and at Tuy Hoa AFB in Vietnam. During munitions training in Denver, he played with the base band. After returning from duty in Vietnam, he served on the fire department at George AFB.
In 2013, he was selected as Clerk-Treasurer for the Town of Newburgh, a position he held until his death. He was also a licensed local pastor, serving four years at Richland United Methodist Church in Spencer County.
Before becoming a pastor, he was director of Senior Ministries at Newburgh United Methodist Church and had led several Bible study classes.
He was an avid Harley rider and served as secretary/treasurer this past year for the Legion Riders at the Kapperman Post in Newburgh. He was also a member of the Indiana Harley Owners Group (HOG).
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Churubusco, Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine at Fort Wayne. He had served in several posts with the Lodge at Churubusco, including Worshipful Master.
He loved theater and acted in several plays, the latest being with the Newburgh Community Theater.
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Nancy; his son, Michael (Barbara); his daughter, Beth (Eric) Stotts; step-daughter, Jill (Gary) Sampson; stepson, John Searfoss (Mindy) and stepson, Cole Lybarger; grandchildren: Ilana and Aiden Lybarger; Jae and Josephine Stotts and John Thomas Searfoss and Corianne Kirby; a niece and nephew and many friends and associates who will miss him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Julie; his granddaughter, Naiya; and his brother, Bill.
A celebration of his life will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2018 at Titzer Family Funeral Home, Simpson Chapel, 510 W. Jennings St., Newburgh, IN (812) 853-8314. A wake will begin at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Newburgh United Methodist Church, 4178 State Route 261, Newburgh, IN, with Full Military Rites conducted by the American Legion Post #44 Honor Guard and at 2 p.m. at Richland United Methodist Church, 1000 N Highway 133, Richland, IN.
