Julian E. Calhoun, 85, of Newburgh, Ind., passed away Sunday, October 5, 2014 at St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born in Central City, KY on October 23, 1928 to the late Everett and Pauline (Payne) Calhoun. He lived most of his life in Owensboro, Ky. He was on the Basketball All City Team at St. Joseph High School in Owensboro, perfecting the jump shot. Julian was a Korean War Veteran and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Stars and various other medals. He managed Kroger Super Stores for 26 years in Owensboro, Evansville, and Louisville. He also worked for Fuller Brokers of Indianapolis, IN. He was a former member of St. Anthony's Church in Clarksville, IN, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Oakland City, IN, and was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the bereavement committee as well as serving twice on the church council. He was a recipient of the Simon Brute Award and was a member of Right to Life of Gibson County. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James Henry Calhoun, sister, Juanita Riney, son, Tony Calhoun, brother, Rev. Fr. Gerald "Jerry" Calhoun, and son-in-law, Robert Rice. Julian is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte (Swift) Calhoun; son, Charles H. Calhoun (Terri), daughter, Julie Rice, son, Jeffrey D. Calhoun, daughter, Mary Snoddy (Bill), daughter, Robin L. Knight (Howard); sisters, Mary Lucy Strehl, Martha Warren both of Owensboro, KY; brothers, Sherrell Calhoun (Jeannie) of Madisonville, KY, James Robert Calhoun of Albuquerque, NM; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday October 9, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Rd. Newburgh, IN. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City, IN with full military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday October 8, 2014 at Titzer Family Funeral Homes ~ Newburgh Chapel, 510 W. Jennings St. Newburgh, IN (812) 853-8314.
