Margaret Jane (Kaiser) Welte, 93, of Newburgh, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at St. Vincent Hospital. She was born in Warrick County on April 7, 1926 to the late William and Mary (Berfanger) Kaiser. She was a 1944 graduate of Newburgh High School. Margaret was a lifelong active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Newburgh, where she was baptized in 1926 and was involved in numerous parish groups and organizations over the years.
Margaret and her husband Earl, owned Earl Welte and Sons Masonry Contractors. Margaret also worked for over 40 years at the Homestead Restaurant in Newburgh where she was know by many as the "Homestead Lady". Margaret was forced into retirement at the age of 79, when the restaurant was closed after the 2005 tornado.
Margaret then began to fill her time volunteering at St. Vincent's Hospital and the Newburgh Food Pantry. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling with her friend and former co-worker, Rose Gesselman, and cooking large meals for her family. At the Kaiser family reunions she brought the "dumpling pot" (passed down from her mother) full of delicious chicken & dumplings. You had to be the first in line if you wanted any. Sorry to those who missed out over the years.
She never knew a stranger and was loved & admired by many.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Earl Welte; sisters, Hilda Titzer, Kathleen Weiss; brother, Ralph Kaiser. She is survived by her children, Steven Welte, William Welte, Carol Spillman (Aubrey) all of Newburgh; grandchildren, Craig Spillman (Jenny) of Ames, Iowa, Brian Spillman (Kelsey) of Newburgh; great-granddaughter, (who shares her name) Margaret Spillman; sister-in-law, Doris Welte; cousin, Mildred Stippler; many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly and her beloved companion, Beagle dog, Gracie.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 1, 2020 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Rd. Newburgh, IN 47630. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2020, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Titzer Family Funeral Homes ~ Simpson Chapel, 510 W. Jennings St. Newburgh, IN 47630 (812) 853-8314. Additional visitation will be 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at church. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.titzerfuneralhomes.com.
