Maurice "Johnny" N. Schmidt, 85, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2014, at home. He was born September 12, 1928, in Rural Warrick County, to the late George L. and Clara (Brumley) Schmidt. He went to St. John's Elementary School and attended Newburgh High School. Johnny was in the United States Army from 1950-1952. He was a member of the Newburgh American Legion Kappermann Post #44 and a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church. Johnny retired from Alcoa after 28 years in 1993. He is survived by his wife, Doris (Rice) Schmidt; sons, Michael M. Schmidt (Debbie Powers), Matthew G. Schmidt (Kristi); daughter, Carla M. Spanier (Mark); grandchildren, Michelle M. Robinson (Chris), Melissa A. McClanahan (Matt), Joseph A. Schmidt, Jonathan M. Schmidt, Kevin Schmidt, Krystal Schmidt, Patrick Spanier, Nicholas Spanier; great-grandchildren, Rose Robinson, Ruie Robinson, Dean McClanahan, Mattie Welte; siblings, Joseph B. Schmidt, Robert Schmidt, and Mary M. Schmidt. Johnny was preceded in death by his siblings, Bernard Schmidt, Edward Schmidt, Leo Schmidt, and Bernadette Schmidt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m., Friday, September 12, 2014, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 625 Frame Rd., Newburgh, Indiana. Father Thomas Kessler will officiate and burial will follow in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery with full Military Rites conducted by the Newburgh American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at Titzer Family Funeral Homes, Simpson Chapel, 510 W. Jennings St., Newburgh, Indiana (812) 853-8314. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be held 9 a.m. to Mass time Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Newburgh Area Food Pantry.
