Robert J. Abney, 84, of Newburgh, passed away Monday, May 2, 2011, surrounded by his loving family after a six month battle with lung cancer, at his son, David's home in Newburgh. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Army. He retired from Alcoa, in the finishing department after 22 years. Bob enjoyed traveling and being a member of the All Seasons Camping Club for many years. He also enjoyed the fellowship of the Newburgh Senior Center and performing in the Kazoo Band, and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bettie Abney; three sons, Rodney (Reda) of Winder, GA, David (Kathy) of Newburgh, and Jeffrey (Betty) of Raeford, NC; five grandchildren, David II. of Indiana Trevor of California, Rodney Jr. and Amy of Georgia, and Elizabeth of Alabama; nine great- grandchildren, Lauren, Hannah, Ethan of Indiana, Samantha of California, Isaiah, Elijah, and Will of Georgia, and Isaiah and Aiden of Alabama; brother, Ray of Texas; many nieces and nephews. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Kenneth Combs and Dr. Thomas Waits and the caring people from Vista Care Hospice. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Titzer Family Funeral Homes ~ Simpson Chapel, 510 W. Jennings St. Newburgh, IN. Reverend Chris Nunley will officiate. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Newburgh Senior Center, 529 Jefferson St. Newburgh, IN 47630.
