Robert Reynolds “Bob” Forrester of Evansville IN passed away on Thursday, Jan 21 at the Heritage Center after an extended illness.
Bob was born January 23, 1930 in Mason City IA, the son of Wayne and Sarah Ellen “Ellen” Reynolds Forrester and moved to Evansville IN in 1937. He was a 1948 graduate of Central High School where he served as the marching band’s drum major and was an accomplished saxophonist. His musical interests continued with the same roles, and served as vice president of the music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha until he graduated from Evansville College in 1952 with a degree in education. Bob took some time away from school to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and was stationed at Ft Bliss, TX. Upon completing his commitment to the Army, he successfully completed a Masters of Education Degree from Indiana University in 1957.
Upon his return to Evansville he began a 39 year career as a public educator. He taught Language Arts at Howard Roosa Elementary School and became a school counselor in 1961. In 1962 Bob was appointed principal of West Heights Elementary School until being assigned to McGary Elementary School in 1964. In 1979 he transferred to Scott Elementary School where he remained until his retirement in 1993.
Bob’s cared deeply about each and every student, and his commitment to them was clear. He made sure he learned every student's name so he could greet them individually at the beginning of each day, a practice he continued until his last day as an educator. He engaged his students in the total learning process from the outset, and encouraged them to develop a love of learning, to continue their studies, and to achieve great things. He set the example for learning, and although he retired from the education field, Bob remained a life-long learner…a trait he instilled in his children and grandchildren alike.
Upon retirement, he was active in the Central High School Class of 1948 Reunion Committee and also served as a member of the Deaconess Family Medicine Residency Community Advisory Board. He had a great love for life and he shared that passion with all who knew him. He enjoyed several interests such as: swing, square and round dancing; gardening; traveling; reading; and cheering on his beloved St. Louis Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts. One of his greatest joys however, revolved around his love of animals. Bob and Barbara rescued and rehabilitated abandoned cats, many of which became much loved members of the family.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Barbara Williams Forrester of Evansville IN and three wonderful children: Robin Forrester-Meadows (spouse Ron) of Shelby Twp, MI and their children Veronica and Robert; Lisa Forrester Fisher of Pea Ridge, AR; and Robert Forrester (spouse Cynthia) of Lansing, KS and their children Carolyn and Graham.
