Steven Welte, (also known as Hawk by his friends & family), a life-long resident of Newburgh, Indiana passed away on Thursday, February 27, at the age of 75 from cancer. His parents Earl and Margaret (Kaiser) Welte preceded him in death.
Steve went to St John's grade school in Newburgh and graduated from Memorial High School in 1967. After Memorial, he was one of the first to attend ISUE at the Centennial School in downtown Evansville. After 3+ years at ISUE he decided he didn’t want an office job and went back to laying bricks with his father, who put him to work while he was still in grade school. Steve was a self-employed masonry contractor his whole life, doing most of his work in Newburgh, where the housing boom that started in the 70s, kept him busy for decades. Steve was a NHRA drag racing fan, he enjoyed and rarely missed the US Nationals in Indianapolis over Labor Day. He also had a river camp in Enterprise, Indiana for many years. He was officially known as the unofficial mayor of Enterprise, a title we think was bestowed on him by his lifelong friend John Crowley, a resident of Enterprise. After retirement, Steve could often be found in the woods behind his house using one of his many chainsaws cutting firewood to sell.
Steve is survived by a brother Bill Welte, sister Carol (Aubrey) Spillman, nephews Craig (Jenny) Spillman, Brian (Kelsey) Spillman, great nieces Margaret, Annie, Madison, and great nephew Jackson.
