William R. "Bill" TenBarge, 91, of Evansville, Ind., passed away May 25,
2012 at his daughter's home where he resided. He was the son of William
and Henrietta (Dewig) TenBarge. Bill graduated from the Old Central High
School in 1939 and worked at Whirlpool for 43 years, retiring in 1983.
Bill joined the Army in 1942 and spent the whole time in the Pacific. He
had hopped from New Caledoniato toYokohamon Japan. He personally
witnessed General McArthur sign the treaty of Japan.
Bill was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church since 1952 where he
took an active part in the school and church. He belonged to the original
choir, the Men's Club (formally known as the Holy Name Society), and the
Senior Club. Bill and his wife, Mary had been tour guides for many senior
trips. He was also a Sunday van driver for many years. Bill and Mary
served on the original bereavement dinners. He was on the Honorary Club
at the Evansville Athletic Club. Bill was a member of the Knights of St.
John, St. Joseph Commandery #306 since 1946, where he served as
president for many years and received many awards. He was awarded the
Indiana Knight of the Year in 1977 and the International Knight of the Year in
2006. He was appointed a Brigadier General in 1992 and served as
Indiana Grand Secretary for 20 years.
Bill and his wife, Mary enjoyed traveling. Their personal trips included
Germany, Austria, Ireland, Rome, Alaska, Canada and almost every state
in the USA.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Mary Agnes (Gardner)
TenBarge who passed away February 5, 2009; five sisters, four brothers
and his parents.
He is survived by four daughters, Carolyn Putnam (Mike), Alice Jenkins
(Ron), Bette Dick (Lou), and Darlene Linberg (Tony); eight grandchildren,
thirteen great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews; and one
sister-in-law, Anna Eble.
A special thanks to Lori, Nancy and Mary Ellen for all their help in caring for
Bill.
Funeral services will begin at 9:15 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at
Titzer Family Funeral Homes ~ Miller & Miller Colonial Chapel, 100 E.
Columbia St. Evansville, Ind., continuing with A Mass of Christian Burial at
10:00 a.m., at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1301 S. Green River Rd.
Evansville, Ind. Reverend Father Bernie Etienne will officiate. Entombment
will be in St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum. The Retired Veterans
Memorial Club of Vanderburgh County will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2012. There
will be a Parish Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Knights of St. John,
St. Joseph Commandery #306 service at Titzer Family Funeral Homes ~
Miller & Miller Colonial Chapel (812) 424-9274. Additional visitation will be
held Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess
Hospice or the William and Mary TenBarge Endowment Fund at Holy
Rosary Catholic Church.
